Bill 6695: An Act Concerning the Protection of Youth from Conversion Therapy

NASW/CT supports House Bill 6695 that will ban licensed professionals in CT from performing conversion therapy with minors. Conversion therapy treats sexual orientation of being gay or lesbian as a mental illness that needs to be treated in order to “cure” one’s sexual orientation.

Here is why we support the bill:

  • Conversion therapy has been condemned by all of the major mental health professions as false therapy.
  • Conversion therapy is often harmful to children who may be psychologically traumatized from being subjected to this therapy.
  • Sexual orientation of being gay or lesbian should be affirmed not denied. Therapy should be to help find oneself, not deny oneself.
  • Conversion therapy is a discriminatory act that is used against gays and lesbians and should not be allowed in Connecticut.
