Fairfield Private Practice presents the next network meeting entitled Understanding Suicide in the Elderly in America. This program examines suicide in our older-adult population through a wide-range of perspectives, such evidence-based links between medical, psychiatric and cognitive decline. In addition, demographics such as race, cultural beliefs and traditions are discussed in relation to the prevalence of suicide within this population.

This unique workshop will discuss and apply known risk and protective factors attained from psychological autopsies. Workshop participants will be able to identify the various points of engagement in which a social work practitioner can intervene and divert suicidal intent in seniors. Topics of physician assisted suicide, end-of-life legislation, and legal, moral and ethical rights will be discussed.

Educational objectives include:

  • Description of variances in suicide prevalence
  • Knowledge of suicide impact factors, risk and protective factors
  • Identification of moral legal and ethical arguments regarding the right-to-die perspectives
  • Information regarding the lethality rate of suicide in older-adults
  • Understanding of how psychological changes, psychopathologies and unconscious motivations cause adverse actions
  • Discussion of the impact of the social environment makes an impact
  • Learning how to divert the trajectory through counseling, psychotherapy, behavior modification and mental health consultation

This workshop is presented by Dr. Stephanie Paulmeno, DNP.MS, RN, NHA, CCM, CPH, CDP- President of the CT Nurses Association and of Communities 4 Action. Stephanie earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Quinnipiac University and previously earned her Masters from the College of New Rochelle. Stephanie also holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Gerontology from St. Thomas Aquinas College, and she became a Registered Nurse through Beth Israel Medical Center School of Nursing. Stephanie hold numerous licenses and professional certifications. She currently works at Global Health Systems Consultants, LLC in Old Greenwich, CT

Approved for 2 CECs by NASW/CT!  1 of the CECs qualifies for the Cultural Competence requirement.
