LMSW Started May 15th

We are pleased to announce that the Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) began on May 15, 2014.

The LMSW application will be strictly online. The link to apply through DPH is http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3121&q=508424

The LMSW will be MANDATORY for MSWs who are practicing clinical social work and do not have the LCSW. Exceptions will be made for MSWs who are working toward the LCSW and attain the LCSW by May 1, 2015. Certified School Social Workers and nursing home social workers are exempt from social work licensure.

All MSWs who had their MSW degree from a CSWE accredited program on or before October 1, 2013 can be grandfathered into the LMSW. The grandfathering period ends on October 1, 2015 however it is recommended to apply for grandfathering well before the deadline as DPH must complete and issue your license by October 1, 2015. All MSWs who attain their MSW after October 1, 2013 must take the LMSW exam to attain the LMSW.

The fee for the application is $220 and the annual renew fee is $190. There is an additional fee to take the exam. The LMSW application process will consist of filing the application, paying the fee and having an official MSW transcript submitted.

For full details as to the provisions of the LMSW, including supervision requirements and practice restrictions, go to http://naswct.wpengine.com/professional-information/licensure/key-provisions-lmsw/

I have taking the LMSW since 2004. I failed it several times. A grandfather legislation will be very helpful to me. I have 11 years of social work experience having to work with different people from different cultural backgrounds and issues. There is no population I have not worked with during the 11 years. My only stumbling block is the LMSW. Please someone help me with the grandfather amnesty.

      Sincerely yours.

The deadline is quickly approaching for applying for grandfathering into the LMSW. The Department of Public Health must issue the license by October 1, 2015. This means that even if your application is submitted prior to October 1, 2015 if DPH is unable to complete your application and issue the license by October 1, 2015 you will not be licensed without examination. You will still be able to attain the LMSW however it will require passage of the LMSW examination.

To be eligible for grandfathering you must have attained your MSW degree prior to October 1, 2013. To apply for grandfathering you must complete an online application at http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3121&q=543366, pay the $220 fee using a credit card, and have your university or college submit an official transcript directly to DPH.

We strongly recommend that applicants do not wait past July 2015 to apply in order to give ample time for the application to be completed and the license issued. Applicants who have applied for grandfathering and have not received the license by early September are urged to call DPH at 860-509-7603 to determine the status of the application.

Please note that most, and possibly all other states will not recognize a grandfathered license. Do not expect to have a grandfathered LMSW be recognized outside of Connecticut. If you are planning to practice outside of Connecticut you may call the NASW/CT office for the licensing contact information for the state(s) that you are considering practicing in.

  2. Hello
I work as a school social worker for the past 5 years. I have taken the test 3 times but have failed it. I am about to lose my job next year if I do not meet the license requirements. What are the chances that the same law can be implemented in NYC. I am very overwhelmed with this situation. Can you please help me with any information that you may have?

    Thank you
    Respectfully yours,

    Nancy

  4. can you be grandfather in even if you live in New York City.

  5. I was told in 2010, that I could not be grandfathered in for my LMSW in Tennessee? So I just been working with only my MSW. How do I find out about being grandfathered in because I honestly have been working and did not check until now about my concern. I strongly feel that many of us have done great with just our Masters but need to move for with our License. I paid a lot of money years ago on the exam and didn’t pass. I found it difficult to understand due to lack of being given exact items to pass. I had no problems in college and was on Deans list, but the exam study guides was all over, I am not a sponge so I couldn’t remember everything. If I knew exactly what to study for, I am sure I would have passed. It’s not fair for some. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

  6. Will there be grand fathering in MSW into the LMSW in NYC anytime soon? Other States has been doing this. Please inform.

Although it says the grandfather amnesty ended Oct 2015, I was told recently that the process is going on again. Is this true?

  8. The School of Social Work has partnered with Social Work Examination Services and NASW CT to offer a license review program for LMSW and LCSW.

  9. A grandfather legislation will be excellent for someone like me. I have 17 years of experience yet my biggest issue is passing the test. i recently lost my job because of this of 12 years, i was heartbroken.

  10. Does anyone know if a grandfather legislation will happen again anytime soon? Been trying to pass this LMSW exam for the past 4 years and it’s become so stressful (mentally, economically)?
