WCMHN was formed in 1996 in order to coordinate clinical, fiscal and administrative oversight of Region 5 contracted and state-operated mental health services. Their mission is to provide a comprehensive and effective recovery-oriented system of mental health and addiction services that promotes self-sufficiency, dignity, cultural sensitivity and respect.

Within this service system, there are three state-operated Local Mental Health Authorities, which are located in Waterbury, Danbury and Torrington. Over 200 staff including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, rehabilitation and mental health workers provide services for persons with a long-term mental illness. The Recovery and Wellness Program is a recovery-oriented program based on a classroom model that provides people in recovery with an array of options and choices that provide education, information and peer support. A holistic approach is used to assist individuals to move along the continuum of recovery, health, and wellness. This approach empowers consumers with the necessary tools to obtain the quality of life they choose. “Holistic” is defined as a combination of the mental, physical, spiritual and emotional elements of recovery.

The program offers a full range of services including educational courses, self help groups, individual skill building and support, and pre-vocational skill building programs, such as the WarmLine and HomeWorks programs. The classes provide a forum where information is learned, explored, shared and researched. The Recovery and Wellness Center provides an opportunity for individuals to do research on various educational topics, gather information on psychiatric topics/concerns, and produce the Recovery and Wellness Newsletter.

ABOUT THE UNITS:
Battell 2 North, Battell 3 North, and Battell 3 South are acute general psychiatric treatment units with a maximum census of twenty-two patients. The units provide psychiatric treatment and stabilization for individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness, with the goal of discharge to the community in the most integrated setting possible.

AS A CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER YOU WILL:
-Manage the caseload and consult on complicated client/family problems in the treatment planning process;
-Assess the psychosocial needs including both trauma and risk factors affecting specific clients;
-Be responsible for completing treatment and discharge planning;
-Train/supervise Clinical Social Worker and Master of Social Work students on the wide range of client diversity;
-Consult with others about the legal process;
-Apply legal knowledge to Civil commitments or CT Statutes; and
-Train individuals in the application of assessing for client strengths, coping strategies, and psychosocial risk factors.

CVH opened in 1868 as the State’s public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness. The facility also runs the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program which addresses the needs of TBI survivors, including; reintegration into community living, independent living skills development, vocational and educational training, psychiatric, cognitive and neurological assessment and treatment, speech and physical rehabilitation as well as individual and family counseling.
