 Beyond the Basics:
Advanced Clinical Interventions with Trans Youth and Their Families

A morning workshop in New London co-sponsored by the NASW/CT and NASW/RI chapters. Presented by Elijah C. Nealy, Ph.D., M.Div., LCSW, Assistant Professor, University of Saint Joseph, who has over 25 years of expertise in issue of LGBTQ adolescents and adults.  There is an increasing need for clinicians to provide effective clinical interventions with transgender and gender diverse adolescents and their families. This training moves beyond the basic fundamentals of gender identity, gender expression, and early transition tasks to delve more deeply into the clinical challenges of working with trans adolescents as they navigate their day-to-day lives “post-transition.”

Areas addressed include: shifting friendships with peers of their birth-assigned sex, navigating adolescent developmental tasks such as dating, relationships, and sexual intimacy while trans, intersecting aspects of identity for trans youth of color, persistent dysphoria and body image, recovery from internalized shame, and the normative longing to simply be a “normal teenager.” Strategies to facilitate parental comprehension of these unique challenges, and thus offer more nuanced support, will also be addressed.

Approved for 3 CECs and meets the cultural competence requirement for license renewal.
