Specific challenges are faced by members of the LGBTQ community and due to narrow ideology and prejudgments there are systemic barriers impacting basic human rights of the LBGTQ population. Social workers strive to build environments that are culturally competent and void of emotional stress. Therefore, this workshop will include personal and clinical perspectives to aid in understanding life as a member of the LGBTQ community and ways social workers can display and develop humility and sensitivity to better serve LGBTQ individuals. The educational objectives of this workshop include: (a) understanding key components of transitioning, (b) gain knowledge of appropriate LGBTQ nomenclature, (c) identify the optimal role of a social worker specific to the needs of the LGBTQ community, (d) acquire information regarding available resources, (e) discover ways to advocate for LGBTQ rights.
