LMSWs and Insurance Reimbursement

If you are a LMSW you are not eligible for direct insurance reimbursement when in private practice. Insurers require the LCSW to attain credentialed status as a provider. LMSWs can work in private practice under supervision of a LCSW, LMFT, LPC, APRN or Licensed Psychologist. LMSWs can directly bill consumers who are privately paying or services. The consumer should be informed that they will not be paid by their insurer if they submit the LMSWs bill to insurance (re out of network). Having a claim submitted by a clinically licensed provider is allowable when the insurance company has explicitly agreed to the arrangement of having the supervisor signing off on the claim. In such cases both the direct provider (LMSW) and the supervisor should sign the insurance claim. In certain agency settings LMSWs services are insurance reimbursable to the agency.

Can federally qualified health centers in CT receive reimbursement from Husky, Medicare and private insurance for services submitted by a LMSW?

I am seeing different positions on this matter. The page “Key Provisions of the Licensed Master Social Worker Law” on the NASW CT website states that “LMSWs cannot practice independently. As of October 1, 2013 independent practice requires the LCSW.” Is “independent practice” considered different than “private practice under an LCSW?” Is “independent practice” considered different than “directly billing?” Does anyone have clarification?

I am not sure if you already emailed, but I wanted you to know that I did not receive it yet and I did check my spam folder as well. I have provided a different email address just in case there was an issue with the previous one. Thank you! I look forward to hearing from you.
