POSITION OVERVIEW: The Homeless Prevention and Housing Coordinator works in the Community Services Division of the Department of Recreation and Community Services and provides guidance and referrals to the public about resources regarding homelessness and housing matters. Serves as a third party to mediate and address eviction and foreclosure disputes. Maintains a leadership role in the Coordinated Access Network (CAN) and actively participates in at least one or more of the NB Recovers’ initiative; the Opioid and/or Homelessness task force.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Community Services Administrator.

• Provides resources and guidance to the general public and City departments on housing and other related matters by making referrals to appropriate local, state, federal enforcement agencies as necessary; including, information on tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities and managing matters of homelessness in New Britain.

• Conducts intake assessments with tenants and landlords in order to interact and mediate professionally

• Create and maintain spreadsheets and documentations of:

o Process notes on each client
o Complaints against landlord and/or tenants
o Mediated cases and unresolved cased

• Prepare and submit grant applications and reports as required

• Develops and coordinates training and educational opportunities, and maintain an updated inventory of housing information for the public to access through community- coalitions, partners and other events;

• Ability to maintain relationships with community agencies and court officials

• Develop and sustain a mediation, policies and procedure binder (and electronically) including (but not limited to)

o Intake and assessment forms
o Best practice conflict resolution steps and guidelines for facilitating mediation meetings to allow for constructive discussions

o Agreement forms that will hold up in court

• Attend some evening and/or weekend meetings and/or events as required;

• Active participant in at least one or more of the NB Recovers’ initiative; the Opioid and/or Homelessness task force
